CORPORATE TRAINING -DO'S AND DONT'S

WHAT IS CORPORATE TRAINING?

Corporate training is a skill development program for the employees of an organization in an effort to enhance their skills in the day-to-day business of the organization, in the setting of the requirement of the business.

There is a famous quote which says "The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay."

The above quote says it all. In the world that is changing so fast, training and learning is something that wouldn't leave someone behind. To be up to date with the current trend in any industry, getting training every now and then is the only tool.

NEED FOR CORPORATE TRAINING

Corporate world is constantly changing. So, of course, corporate training is the need of the hour and a very smart move any organization can adapt.

Technology is ever developing and organizations are dependent on such technologies. If the employees of the organizations aren't up to date with the latest technology, the brunt is felt by the business of the organization. So, to keep the ball rolling, many organizations are upskilling their employees on new technologies, at their cost.

While the above is one scenario for corporate training, sometimes training also is needed to enhance the communication skill, critical thinking and problem solving skill, team player skill, and also used for updating the employees on organization's new policies and practices.

Business will come to a standstill if the employees of the firm are not constantly updated on the new skills required and see progress through that. Training is inevitable to face the competitive world.

TYPES OF CORPORATE TRAINING:

There are various types of training available for corporate and one can choose based on the requirement of the business.

  1. Personality Development Program.

  2. Six Sigma.

  3. Lean.

  4. Project Management Program.

  5. Leadership Training.

  6. Work-life balancing program.

Corporates can choose any of the above training programs to be delivered to their staffs depending upon their ultimate goal. If resource management is their goal, Lean is the program they should be looking at. If they find their employees stressed out, work-life balancing program is the one that suits them. So, you do get the gist right, choose what you want and customize however you want it, and the results are yours.

DO'S OF CORPORATE TRAINING:

Training provided for the betterment in the performance and wellness of the employees should follow certain norms to turn the training program into a huge success. There are certain do's which when followed ensures the targeted goal is met with the training. These aren't hard and fast rules, but if the ultimate outcome intended is achieving the goals, it gives a different dimension when following these do's.

Provide consistent training to everyone: When under the same roof, everyone needs to be treated alike. Forget about the result, you might not achieve desired results everywhere, still consistency in training to all is a must. Boosts employee morale.

Set goals: You have to set goals as a company and to an individual employee, and foresee the outcome of the training provided by you.

Celebrate Successes: If the corporate training proved fruitful to an individual or to a department, don't forget to celebrate the success and reward them for the results. This way, the next training session, you have more enthusiastic participants and even better application of the learning.

Assess the staff training: Training is provided expecting to meet the targeted goals, and there should be a time bound measurement scale to understand if the expected goals are met or not. A periodic assessment is required.

Choose for an interactive training session: While training delivers the most important development skill, how it is delivered matters a lot. A day long, slide after slide training tends to give poor results. For a better result, choose an interactive session of training where the employees are required to participate, and hence are paying attention.

Ensure the participants are engaged in planning, strategizing, executing, role playing, etc. Such a training fetches more desired results than others.

Choose the right time: The beginning of the week or mid week is the best advisable time to conduct corporate training since the employees do have the rest of the week to apply what they have learnt.

Conduct training more frequently: The same training can be repeated every six months or a new and different training can be conducted quite often.

DON'TS OF CORPORATE TRAINING:

Now, comes the tough part, the don'ts. It's like walking on thin ice and you never know when you are going to break it. While the intentions of providing corporate training is creating a win-win situation for both the organization and the employees, it sometimes might not end so well, if the don'ts are not paid attention to.

Don't show favoritism: While the asset of any organization is the top performer and there tends to be a little discrimination over that matter, it is not right to leave out someone in the organization while conducting corporate trainings. The very target would be missed if it is does so.

Don't assume the results: Say for instance, your employees were trained on time management for a day and overnight the skill doesn't get developed. It slowly needs to be practiced for it to become a habit. With certain areas of training, you would require patience and followup, and the results would start showing up. Without followup, the learnings are forgotten. So, again as I mentioned earlier, thin ice!!!

Don't rely on one form of training: An organization is made up of multiple individuals and the training needs to cater to all their needs. Some might like to read, some would like to watch a video, while some might prefer to actively participate to understand the training. While you can't conduct individual training, a blend of learning methods would fetch the desired results.

Don't set a wrong example: While employees are trained and expected to follow certain traits of the organization, if you do not follow the same, the training is a failure. Ensure you follow what you expect your subordinates to follow.

Don't expect unrealistic results: Ensure that the desired outcome from the training sessions are realistic and achievable and not unrealistic. If unrealistic goals are set, even the realistic outcome might not turn around.

Don't overdo it: While trainings provide excellent results, it is not advisable to conduct training every month for the same employees. The training might lose its essence while doing so.
